GITEP’s English teacher training programme is designed to develop passionate, confident, knowledgeable and reflective practitioners. Not only does the course equip trainees with the foundational knowledge required to educate students in both English Language and Literature, but this is also woven with sound, evidence-based pedagogical knowledge designed to instruct trainees in how pupils learn best.

  • Expert Subject Knowledge Development: Weekly sessions and mentor support help trainees become confident English specialists. Each Subject Pathway session takes an element of English subject knowledge, weaves it with an element of pedagogical knowledge, forming that golden thread of English teaching.
  • Practical, Evidence-Based Training: Trainees plan and deliver lesson sequences, analyse real national assessments (KS2 & GCSE), and use examiner reports and audits to identify and strengthen their subject knowledge.
  • Focus on Pupil Progress & Equity: The programme promotes high expectations for all learners, challenging fixed mindsets and labels, and equips trainees with inclusive strategies that support SEND pupils and foster positive relationships with the English curriculum.
  • Strong Mentoring & Wellbeing Support: Led by experienced local practitioners and supported by expert mentors, trainees benefit from tailored guidance, regular reflection, and access to the ITTECF to ensure professional growth and wellbeing.

Every Thursday, English trainees gather for weekly subject pathway sessions, to learn something that can be practically taken into their classrooms for that week. The programme delivers high-quality sessions provided by expert colleagues, designed to deepen both subject knowledge and pedagogical understanding.

A typical session might focus on deepening knowledge of Shakespeare, oracy in the English classroom, a key controversial debate (such as whether boys underperform in English), or tackling the ever-elusive formula for accurate exam marking. Sessions also draw on current curriculum developments, national assessments, and the ITT Core Content Framework to ensure that trainees are well-prepared and reflective practitioners.

Applicants for GITEP’s English ITT course will normally have a degree in English or, in some circumstances, a related subject with other literary/linguistic/theatre/media background will be considered. Usually, although not exclusively, successful candidates have at least a 2:1 degree. Candidates will need to show that they have considered how to develop their subject knowledge in terms of the National Curriculum, GCSE and A level requirements for English. Along with an awareness of educational issues, candidates should demonstrate a desire to inspire, motivate and engage with young people around the possibilities open to them in studying English.

The English course has an excellent reputation within Gloucestershire and beyond; our graduates are highly sought after in local schools and in neighbouring counties.
