In our increasingly interconnected and fast changing world, all young people are entitled to be informed about the processes shaping our planet, and to have the confidence, knowledge and skills required to be the decision makers and problem solvers of the future. Teaching Geography helps meet this educational need and GITEP’s Geography teacher training programme ensures trainees leave the course equipped to offer high quality teaching and learning experiences which will equip pupils for life in the modern world.
- Geography for all: Develop learning habits and behaviours in all students that allow them to make meaningful progress, using a range of strategies and pedagogy to inspire, challenge and engage
- Expert Subject Knowledge Development: Embrace Geography Education in the classroom and beyond as an evolving practice, become confident in exploring key geographical pedagogies that promote Geographical enquiry, Powerful knowledge, Thinking Geographically and Decolonising the curriculum
- Fieldwork and GIS Skills: Take part in local and residential fieldwork trips with partner schools in both physical and human geographical settings. Develop your own GIS skills to enhance your teaching practice.
The Geography Subject Pathway programme has been designed to allow the trainee to move from micro to macro, progressing from the starting point of individual lesson planning to developing schemes of learning and eventually considering the opportunities of linking and leading Geography education.
In our weekly sessions, trainees work collaboratively in a supportive and safe environment, where they are encouraged to share ideas, reflect on practice, and learn from one another’s experiences. The sessions are delivered by Geography teaching specialists and are designed to help the trainees become informed, confident, resilient, reflective, and adaptive practitioners.
Each afternoon is sequenced to mirror key stages of the trainees’ time in school, and takes them on an educational journey, starting with an exploration of the basics in Geography pedagogy. In line with the beginning of the first parent placement the sessions explore teaching principles from a Geography specific lens and trainees begin to develop their teacher toolkits. As the trainees move into the twin placement there are opportunities to embed pedagogy and practice in the context of a new placement school, while exploring a variety of new strategies and techniques. The final stage is to extend and enhance thinking, considering the subject of Geography holistically, and the wider context in which the teaching and learning takes place.
Applicants for GITEP’s Geography teacher training course will normally have a geography degree. However, it is a very broad subject and thus there are many related degrees that will be considered when applying to train to teach geography.
Candidates will need to demonstrate that they have considered how to develop their subject knowledge in the National Curriculum, GCSE and A level requirements for geography, especially where topics have not been covered by their degree.
Along with a good degree and an awareness of geographical and educational issues, a desire to inspire, motivate and engage with young people around the possibilities open to them in studying geography is a good starting point for an application.
