GITEP’s History teacher training programme is designed to support and challenge you in becoming an informed, engaged and dynamic teacher of History. The course is intended to equip you to become a History teacher who can:

  • Inspire pupils to engage deeply with the people, events and processes of the past
  • Encourage pupils to view History as a living discipline that is dynamic, contested and evolving
  • Provide pupils with the powerful knowledge and cultural capital that prepares them for lifelong learning and provides access to opportunities

The intent of the History Subject Pathway programme is underpinned by and infused throughout with the five key themes of GITEP: partnership and community; subject knowledge and expertise; evidence informed and reflective practice; pupil progress and outcomes; well-being and support.

History Subject Pathway sessions take place every Thursday afternoon, usually at Balcarras School. Sessions are mostly divided in half with a focus on theory related to the theme of the week in the first half, and a focus on practical classroom strategies in the second half.

The Autumn Term focuses on exploring disciplinary second-order concepts and other essential elements of History teaching such as formative assessment, challenge, inclusion and literacy. The Spring Term focuses on embedding classroom strategies such as retrieval practice, questioning and modelling. We also visit the Wilson Museum and Gloucestershire Heritage Hub during this term to begin to consider History teaching and learning outside the classroom. The Summer Term focuses on enhancing trainee’s teaching practice with a focus on teaching a variety of things, such as: humanities, sensitive topics and environmental history.

Applicants for GITEP’s History ITT course will normally have a good history degree.  Related degrees with significant history content will be taken into consideration.  Candidates will need to demonstrate that they have considered how to develop their subject knowledge in the National Curriculum, GCSE and A level requirements for history, especially when topics have not been covered by their degree.

Along with an awareness of educational issues, candidates should demonstrate a desire to inspire, motivate and engage young people around the possibilities open to them in studying History.
