GITEP’s Mathematics teacher training programme is designed to develop confident, knowledgeable, and reflective practitioners with a strong foundation in subject expertise, inclusive pedagogy, and pupil-focused teaching.
- Expert Subject Knowledge Development: Weekly sessions and mentor support help trainees become confident Mathematics specialists, with a strong focus on curriculum progression from Early Years to Post-16, and mastery of key mathematical strands like Algebra, Geometry, and Statistics.
- Practical, Evidence-Based Training: Trainees plan and deliver lesson sequences, analyse real national assessments (KS2 & GCSE), and use examiner reports and audits to identify and strengthen their subject knowledge.
- Focus on Pupil Progress & Equity: The programme promotes high expectations for all learners, challenging fixed mindsets and labels, and equipping trainees with inclusive strategies that support SEND pupils and foster positive mathematical attitudes.
- Strong Mentoring & Wellbeing Support: Led by experienced local practitioners and supported by expert mentors, trainees benefit from tailored guidance, regular reflection, and access to the ITT Core Content Framework to ensure professional growth and wellbeing.
In our Mathematics subject pathway, trainees take part in weekly, high-quality sessions led by experienced subject specialists, designed to deepen both subject knowledge and pedagogical understanding. These sessions explore key strands of the mathematics curriculum—including Number, Algebra, Geometry, Statistics, and Probability—while also focusing on effective teaching strategies that support progression from Early Years through to Key Stage 4 and beyond.
Trainees work collaboratively in a supportive and safe environment, where they are encouraged to share ideas, reflect on practice, and learn from one another’s experiences. There are regular opportunities to engage in professional debate and rich conversations around mathematical pedagogy, helping trainees develop a confident, evidence-informed approach to teaching. Sessions also draw on current curriculum developments, national assessments, and the ITT Core Content Framework to ensure that trainees are well-prepared and reflective practitioners.
Applicants for GITEP’s Maths teacher training course will normally have a degree in maths or in a related subject with high maths content e.g. engineering or economics. It is essential that candidates have an A-level qualification in maths. Candidates will need to demonstrate that they have considered how to develop their subject knowledge in the National Curriculum, GCSE and A-level requirements for maths.
The course is highly interactive, challenging and stimulating and will require you to be committed, energetic and reflective. We aim to develop and grow outstanding Mathematics teachers who are inquisitive about the issues surrounding Mathematics education, keen to foster positive ‘can do’ attitudes in all pupils and believe all pupils can achieve in mathematics.
A fully funded Subject Knowledge Enhancement course is available to boost subject knowledge before starting the course. This is online and varies in length depending on the depth of knowledge required. The course is designed for those who graduated some years ago or for those who do not have a specialist maths degree.
