GITEP’s Modern Languages teacher training programme is designed to develop confident, knowledgeable, and reflective practitioners who understand the transformative power of communication and cultural learning. Trainees gain a strong foundation in subject expertise, inclusive pedagogy, and evidence-informed practice – learning how to make language learning engaging, purposeful, and accessible for all pupils.
Collaborative Learning & Supportive Community: Weekly sessions bring together a network of passionate linguists and experienced educators. Led by Subject Lead Julie Thomas, alongside visiting experts and native speakers, trainees work in a collaborative, reflective environment where they share ideas, explore new strategies, and deepen their understanding of effective language teaching.
Championing Inclusion and Pupil Progress: The programme promotes high expectations and celebrates diversity. Trainees learn strategies to support all learners, including those with SEND and EAL, and develop confidence in creating inclusive, motivating lessons that inspire pupils to communicate and connect with the wider world.
Modern Languages Subject Pathway sessions normally take place on Thursday afternoons at Chosen Hill School, Churchdown. These sessions are highly interactive, combining practical teaching ideas with professional discussion and reflection.
Trainees also have opportunities to:
- Lead short “knowledge booster” sessions on grammar, phonics, or cultural topics.
- Engage in professional debate around key issues in Modern Languages pedagogy.
- Reflect on progress using the ITT Core Content Framework and current curriculum developments.
Through collaboration and shared expertise, trainees become confident, adaptable language teachers who can plan, inspire, and support pupils across all Key Stages.
Applicants for GITEP’s Modern Languages teacher training course will normally have a degree in a modern language. In some circumstances another subject with significant language content will be considered. A degree may be considered in an unrelated subject if the candidate is a native speaker. It is desirable to have a second subsidiary language, but not mandatory.
Candidates will need to demonstrate that they have considered how to develop their knowledge and should possess a desire to inspire, motivate and engage with young people about the possibilities open to them in studying a modern language.
The languages offered by GITEP are French, Spanish and German. Many of our partnership schools also teach languages such as Russian and Mandarin.
A fully funded Subject Knowledge Enhancement course is available to boost subject knowledge before starting the course. This is online and varies in length depending on the depth of knowledge required.
