GITEP’s Music teacher training programme combines theory with practical experience, helping you grow into a confident and creative classroom practitioner. You will learn how to inspire a love of music in young people, nurturing their imagination, curiosity and confidence through performing, composing and listening.

As a Music teacher, you will have the chance to open doors for pupils, encouraging them to explore sound, develop their musicianship and understand music’s place in culture and society. It is a career that offers variety, creativity and the reward of seeing students find their own voice.

A collaborative and supportive community
You will train within a lively network of local music educators, expert mentors and fellow trainees who share your passion for teaching. Together you will explore how to make music accessible and meaningful for all learners, supported through school placements, specialist workshops and regular subject sessions.

Developing your musical expertise
Weekly subject sessions focus on building your confidence and breadth as a musician and teacher. You will explore key areas of the curriculum including performance, composition, listening and the use of technology in music, while learning effective strategies for teaching across all key stages.

Innovative and reflective teaching
Throughout the course, you will connect research and classroom practice, trying out creative approaches and reflecting on what works best for your pupils. You will develop your own teaching style and learn how to create lessons that engage, challenge and inspire.

Supporting every learner to succeed
The programme helps you develop inclusive approaches to teaching so that every pupil can experience success in music. You will build strategies for supporting different learning needs and develop the confidence to create a positive, encouraging and inspiring classroom environment.

Weekly Subject Pathway sessions are designed to develop trainees into outstanding music practitioners, exploring pedagogical theories and evidence-based strategies that underpin excellent music teaching.

Sessions are highly practical, collaborative and supportive and open and honest reflection, debate and sharing of ideas create a positive environment where trainees learn from one another’s experiences. They are led by the Subject Lead and supported by other expert music practitioners, focusing on developing specialist musical knowledge and skills – whether transposing parts for orchestras, leading mixed-part singing or whole-class ensemble projects. Trainees explore the pedagogy of music teaching: how learning happens, the technical, expressive and constructive elements of the subject, and how lessons can be inclusive and allow all learners to make excellent progress.

Trainees will be provided with the tools and experiences they need to become effective teachers and thrive inside and beyond the secondary music classroom, becoming empowered to capitalize on the challenges and opportunities of music teaching, and being the strongest advocates for the subject.

Applicants for GITEP’s Music ITT course will normally have a degree in music.  In some circumstances, a related subject with significant music content or industry-related experience will be considered.  Candidates will need to demonstrate that they have considered how to develop their subject knowledge in the National Curriculum, GCSE and A level requirements for music, especially where topics have not been covered by their degree.  Along with an awareness of educational issues, a desire to inspire, motivate and engage with young people around the possibilities open to them in studying music is a good starting point for an application.
