Applicants for GITEP’s Music ITT course will normally have a degree in music.  In some circumstances, a related subject with significant music content or industry-related experience will be considered.  Candidates will need to demonstrate that they have considered how to develop their subject knowledge in the National Curriculum, GCSE and A level requirements for music, especially where topics have not been covered by their degree.  Along with an awareness of educational issues, a desire to inspire, motivate and engage with young people around the possibilities open to them in studying music is a good starting point for an application.

Every Thursday afternoon you will come together with your fellow Music trainees, along with your Subject Lead. This unique element of our course provides the opportunity for you to learn more about your subject and the pedagogy surrounding it as well as share good practice with your colleagues. Subject Pathway sessions are incredibly varied and include workshops, seminars, guest speakers and trips.

The intent of the Music Subject Pathway course is to support and guide you to become a Music teacher who can:

  • Challenge themselves to develop skills in areas where they have less experience
  • Engage with educational research and pedagogy and be a reflective practitioner
  • Develop a repertoire of teaching and learning techniques and understand where Music fits in the National Curriculum
  • Support schools in events, on trips and in whole-school productions

The intent of the Music Subject Pathway programme is underpinned by, and infused throughout with, the five key themes of the GITEP Initial Teacher Education Partnership; partnership and community, subject knowledge and expertise, evidence informed and reflective practice, pupil progress and outcomes and well-being and support.

Music Subject Pathway sessions take place at a Partnership school in the county.
