GITEP’s Computing teacher training programme is designed to prepare you to be an effective and engaging Computing teacher, equipped with the appropriate skills, knowledge and connections to inspire the innovators of tomorrow’s technology.
- You will gain thorough subject knowledge, encompassing the understanding of pedagogical approaches suited to Computing. You will be able to link this to careers effectively to showcase to students real world applications and roles.
- You will become an adaptive teacher, familiar with a variety of ways to effectively use formative and summative assessment to enable all pupils to make progress in a safe environment.
- You will know where to find the latest research to inform and develop your pedagogy and be able to reflect on the research to understand how best to apply it.
- You will develop a strong sense of where you fit in the local and global community of Computing teachers and begin to build your professional network.
Subject pathway sessions focus on how your experiences in the classroom and professional studies apply to computing, allowing you to contextualise your learning in the subject. Regular guest speakers include expert teachers from local schools, computing legends such as Craig ‘n’ Dave, university lecturers, the Regional Cyber Crime Unit and industry professionals.
The sessions run primarily at Ribston Hall High School, in one of the computing classrooms. Visits to other establishments include time spent at Cirencester College and an end of year celebration escape room!
Computing applicants for GITEP’s ITT course will normally have a 2:2 degree or above in a related subject in order to be accepted but relevant experience will be taken into consideration. A logical mind and experience in some aspect of computer science, such as web design or programming, are useful although candidates who demonstrate the willingness to learn are also considered.
Candidates will need to demonstrate that they have considered how to develop their knowledge and possess a desire to inspire, motivate and engage young people with the possibilities of this dynamic and ever-changing subject.
A fully funded Subject Knowledge Enhancement course is available to boost subject knowledge before starting the course. This is online and varies in length depending on the depth of knowledge required.
