International Trainees

GITEP’s tuition fee for International Students for the year 2025/26 is £10,300.

If you are not a UK citizen, you are unlikely to get help funding your training unless you have permission to live permanently in the UK, for example under the EU Settlement Scheme, or are training to teach languages or physics.

Bursaries and scholarships for non-UK trainee languages and physics teachers

There are 2 types of financial support you can get if you’re interested in training to teach languages or physics and meet the eligibility criteria:

  • bursaries worth £26,000 for languages, and £29,000 for physics
  • scholarships worth £28,000 for French, German and Spanish, and £31,000 for physics

Bursaries and scholarships are tax-free payments from the UK government that you do not have to pay back. They are paid to you by your teacher training provider. You cannot receive both a bursary and a scholarship.

Proof of right to work/study in the UK

If you are not a UK citizen, you will need to provide proof of your immigration status and right to work or study in the UK. GITEP SCITT cannot sponsor visas, therefore you will need to have one of the following, which allows you to train as a teacher in the UK without visa sponsorship:

  • Settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme
  • Indefinite leave to remain
  • British National (Overseas) visa
  • Family visa
  • Permission to live in the UK as a dependant of someone on a visa
  • Graduate visa
  • High Potential Individual visa
  • India Young Professionals Scheme visa
  • UK Ancestry visa
  • Youth Mobility Scheme visa

GITEP SCITT will carry out the required checks either online (if you have a right to work share code) or by checking your documents in person at the GITEP office.

If you have overseas qualifications, you will need to provide a statement from ENIC that your qualifications are equivalent to Maths and English GCSE grades A*–C and/or your degree qualification is equivalent to a UK honours degree with the equivalent award of 2:2 or above. To be registered for the PGCE, your qualifications will also need to meet the university entry requirements. We will check and confirm this on your behalf.

If you are required to successfully complete GCSE equivalency tests, you should apply directly to the equivalency course provider.

Overseas certificate of good conduct/police record check

If you have not lived in the UK for all of the past five years or more, the Department for Education require additional safeguarding checks. Please note that the requirement for overseas checks also applies for UK applicants who have been living abroad, at any point in the last five years. You can check how you can obtain your certificate of good conduct via the following link:

Please note that it can take some time to obtain a certificate of good conduct, so we would advise that you begin this process immediately.
