Computing applicants for GITEP’s ITT course will normally have a 2:2 degree or above in a related subject in order to be accepted but relevant experience will be taken into consideration. A logical mind and experience in some aspect of computer science, such as web design or programming, are useful although candidates who demonstrate the willingness to learn are also considered.
Candidates will need to demonstrate that they have considered how to develop their knowledge and possess a inspire, motivate and engage young people with the possibilities of this dynamic and ever-changing subject.
A fully funded Subject Knowledge Enhancement course is available to boost subject knowledge before starting the course. This is online and varies in length depending on the depth of knowledge required.
Every Thursday afternoon you will come together with your fellow Computing trainees and your Subject Lead. This unique element of our course provides the opportunity for you to learn more about your subject and the pedagogy surrounding it as well as share good practice with your colleagues. Subject Pathway sessions are incredibly varied and include workshops, seminars, guest speakers and trips.
The intent of the Computing Subject Pathway course is to support and guide you to become a Computing teacher who can:
- Understand the core components of Computing, Information Technology and Digital Literacy
- Engage in reflection, discussion, and analysis of leading computing research and pedagogy to develop critical analysis
- Promote school-wide e-safety and use their practice to address ethnic and gender disparities surrounding the field
The intent of the Computing Subject Pathway programme is underpinned by, and infused throughout with, the five key themes of the GITEP Initial Teacher Education Partnership; partnership and community, subject knowledge and expertise, evidence informed and reflective practice, pupil progress and outcomes and well-being and support.
Computing Subject Pathway sessions take place at a Partnership school in the county.

BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, has teacher training scholarships worth £31,000 available to computing trainees starting their teacher training in the 2025/26 academic year.
BCS is looking for outstanding individuals who are passionate about computing and have the potential to become inspirational teachers. Applicants should have a thorough knowledge of school-level computer science.
