Design Technology Trainees

Design Technology teachers have to cover a number of different skills/topics in their classes so while we ask our trainees to be masters of one particular area, they still need to have or develop skills in other areas. The subject pathway sessions help with this and the pictures below show some of the things our Design Technology trainees get up to.

If you have a relevant degree (there are many for this subject!) and think you can bring together maths, science and art in a practical format, you could teach young people some essential life skills and inspire them to think outside the box.

Degree specialisms regarded as highly suitable include (but are certainly not limited to) food nutrition, food products, catering, textiles (with evidence of 3D work), architecture, product design, furniture design, 3D design, engineering, control systems, electronics and graphic design (with evidence of 3D work).

Some applicants hold a degree in a totally different subject.  If this is the case you need to submit evidence that you are able to make quality products in food, textiles, resistant materials or systems and control; recognise the importance of design in our society; and communicate through a variety of methods including sketching and ICT. For the 2023-2024 academic year there will be a bursary of £20,000 available to train to teach this subject.
